Of course, dinner suits also require a bow tie and a waistcoat or cummerbund. In any "undress" (black tie) situation, a buttoned tuxedo is completely and utterly wrong, and the double-breasted variant is the only exception. In the awkward world of quarter-formals, I would rather see a buttoned jacket than flapping long ties and exposed low-rise trousers. It's the lesser of two evils, in that case.

Bar the world of tuxedos, and single breasted jackets can be worn either way; it's simply a matter of shades of formality. Less formal has been considered a blazer with either a long tie, open collar, or no waistcoat -- it is worn buttoned (with a single button, nearest the natural waist) to be historically "correct." An unbuttoned blazer is more formal, but historically required a waistcoat. Today, casual wear has loosened the rules somewhat, and you're usually safe with an unbuttoned jacket -- but it never hurts to remember the button rule.Mr Thompsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07630695883122086178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588768300820642957.post-5821749593896240642013-01-30T11:13:49.638-05:002013-01-30T11:13:49.638-05:00Except you state that single-breasted jackets (as ...Except you state that single-breasted jackets (as shown in photos) are acceptable buttoned-up: they are not.
